Siemens launches “live betting” for mobiles

Siemens Mobile has added the option of “live betting” to its mobile data services portfolio, via their m.traction technology. M.traction is a platform for mobile network companies to build platforms for mobile gambling and other applications.

The press release claims that traditionally, bets could only be placed before the event began. Now, thanks to m.traction Gambling, a new form of betting (in Siemens’ words) is possible, based on `dynamic odds’ and allowing wagers to be laid while the match or race is still in progress.

According to Siemens’ press release, “The new betting service came through its baptism of fire with flying colors during the recent football World Cup. Soccer fans could use their mobiles to put their money on the outcome of any of the matches, even after kick-off and right up to the final whistle…”

Of course, it has been done on the PC-based Internet before: Online sports book Intertops’ in-game betting launched during this year’s world cup to some success.

But, Siemens think that this form of betting will take off on mobiles – and why not? A media that is suited to people on the move is ideally suited to rapidly changing odds.
